2025-2026 Ann-Hua Math Program Overview
At Ann-Hua Chinese School, we offer a well-structured and enriching math program for students from Kindergarten through 12th grade. Our goal is to support every learner—from building strong foundations to excelling in competitions and standardized tests.
Program Tracks:We provide four complementary tracks to serve diverse learning needs:
- Core Math Curriculum (Math 1A–5, AP Courses)
Follows a structured progression from elementary arithmetic through algebra, geometry, precalculus, and calculus. Ideal for students seeking mastery and advancement beyond school math. - Math Olympiad Track (MO1–MO3) and Math Olympiad Club
Designed for talented and motivated students who enjoy problem-solving and wish to compete in math contests such as MOEMS, AMC8/10/12, and more. Students are grouped by ability and contest readiness. - SAT Math Preparation (NEW)
High school students who have completed Algebra 2 can join this results-driven class focused on mastering SAT math through content review, strategy, and timed practice. Taught by experienced instructors with a track record in standardized testing success. - Homework Club (Grades K–8)
Held Tuesdays and Thursdays, this flexible program provides structured homework support and foundational skill-building in a small-group setting. Students may attend one or both days.

1. Math Olympiad Level 1 (Grades 4-6) - New Teacher Highlight
Instructor: Dr. Wenqin (Wendy) Pan (潘文沁)
Dr. Pan brings deep experience and enthusiasm to Ann-Hua’s enrichment programs. With a Ph.D. in Biostatistics and a B.S. in Mathematics, she previously taught Math Olympiad Level 1 for six years at Chapel Hill Chinese School (NC), where her classes were in high demand.This entry-level Olympiad course introduces students to creative problem solving, number sense, logical thinking, and geometry through fun, challenging problems. It is perfect for curious students who want to explore math beyond the textbook and prepare for contests like MOEMS, MathCounts, and AMC 8.

2. SAT Math Program (Grades 9-12) - New Program Launch
Instructor: Dr. Zongyin ZhangAnn-Hua Math is proud to launch its new SAT Math Program in 2025–2026, designed for high school students preparing for the SAT. Dr. Zongyin Zhang, who holds a Ph.D. in Materials Chemistry and has over 20 years of math teaching experience, will lead this course.
Each 8–12-week session includes test-taking strategies, real SAT practice questions, timed drills, and content review in algebra, data analysis, geometry, and advanced math topics.

3. Math Olympiad Talent Club
By Invitation ONLY | For Motivated and Gifted Math Students
The Math Olympiad Talent Club at Ann-Hua is an advanced enrichment program designed for students who demonstrate exceptional mathematical ability and a strong passion for problem-solving.
Program Highlights
- Selective admission based on teacher recommendation, performance, or placement test
- Advanced training in algebra, number theory, combinatorics, geometry, and proof-based reasoning
- Personalized mentoring and small-group instruction
- Strategic preparation for elite contests: AMC 10/12, AIME, Michigan Math Meet, MMaths, Math Prize for Girls, and ARML
- Opportunities to lead teams and represent the school in national competitions

4. Math Contests and Enrichment Opportunities
We encourage all students to challenge themselves and gain confidence by participating in math contests. Ann-Hua administers the following contests:
- MOEMS – Math Olympiads for Elementary and Middle Schools (Grades 4–6)
- AMC 8 / 10 / 12 – National math competitions with increasing difficulty levels
- Math Kangaroo – A fun, international contest focused on creative thinking
- Gauss Contests – Middle school contests hosted by the University of Waterloo
We also organize and coach teams to participate in exciting, collaborative competitions:
- Michigan Math Meet (UM)
- MMATHS – Math Majors of America Tournament for High Schools
- ARML – American Regions Mathematics League (National Team Contest)
These opportunities are supported through our Olympiad classes and team training sessions.

Meet our faculties
Sylvia (Xinyuan) Zhang, MA in Education and Applied Statisitics
Ms. Sylvia Zhang has a master’s degree in educational studies from University of Michigan-Ann Arbor and a Master's degree in Applied Statistics from Eastern Michigan University. While at EMU, she worked as a Graduate Assistant in the Math Lab, supporting both professors and students in teaching and learning mathematics. She has spent many years teaching elementary-level courses at Ann-Hua. Ms. Sylvia Zhang is skilled at inspiring students' interests in her subjects and helping them develop strong foundational skills in her classes.
Angel Chen Boker, BA
Angel Chen Boker has worked internationally in the U.S., China, and Japan for over 15 years. She speaks English, Mandarin, and Japanese, and brings strong skills in organization, planning, and communication. Though new to classroom teaching, she enjoys working with children and is excited to help them grow in confidence and understanding in math. Angel Chen Boker’s goal is to make learning clear, structured, and enjoyable for every student.
Jan Gombert, MA in Math and MA in Education
Jan Gombert has taught high school and college-level mathematics for over ten years in a variety of settings, including England, Honolulu, and Detroit. In addition to his teaching experience, he has worked as a manager, designer, and developer in three software startup companies, creating products in computer graphics, education, and medical monitoring.
His diverse background has shown him that the value of a strong mathematics education goes far beyond standardized tests—it builds the ability to think critically and solve real-world problems. This belief drives his teaching philosophy. At Ann-Hua, Mr. Gombert is committed to helping students develop both mathematical understanding and the problem-solving mindset that will serve them throughout their lives.
Zhongrui Li , PhD
Dr. Zhongri Li is a dedicated STEM educator with over 20 years of experience. His teaching background spans private tutoring, middle and high school instruction, and lecturing at the college level. With deep expertise in the K–12 math curriculum, he has taught a wide range of courses, including Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus I–III, Linear Algebra, and Discrete Mathematics.
Dr. Li is passionate about making learning engaging and meaningful through interactive, student-centered activities that spark curiosity and build a lasting appreciation for mathematics and physics. As an experienced science researcher, he believes that a strong math education is not just about test scores—it’s about developing critical thinking and real-world problem-solving skills.
At Ann-Hua Chinese School, Mr. Li is committed to inspiring students to see mathematics as both powerful and practical, empowering them to think creatively, excel academically, and meet challenges with confidence.
Yuyue Zhao, MA in Education
Yuyue Zhao is a certified secondary math teacher in Michigan with strong experience supporting middle and high school students in learning math. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from Michigan State University and is completing his Master’s in Educational Studies at the University of Michigan, with a focus on learning design and innovation. Mr. Zhao has taught Algebra, Geometry, and SAT-level content in both in-person and online settings.
Mr. Yuyue Zhao is passionate about helping students build confidence and independence in math through clear explanations and caring support.
Jonathan Xia, PhD
Professor Jonathan Xia is a faculty member in the Mathematics Department at a local college and brings deep expertise and passion for teaching advanced mathematics. He has extensive experience working with high school and college-level students and is committed to helping them build strong foundations and analytical thinking skills.
Wenqin (Wendy) Pan (潘文沁), PhD
Wenqin (Wendy) Pan (潘文沁) holds a B.S. in Mathematics and a Ph.D. in Biostatistics. She recently moved to Ann Arbor and is excited to begin her first year teaching Math Olympiad Level 1 at Ann-Hua Chinese School. Prior to this, Dr. Pan taught the same course for six years (two full rounds) at Chapel Hill Chinese School (NC), where her classes were highly sought after and often filled to capacity—可谓一座难求.
With years of experience teaching fun math to younger students and AMC 10 preparation to advanced learners, Dr. Pan brings both depth and breadth to her teaching. Dr. Pan looks forward to sparking curiosity and building problem-solving skills in every student she teaches.
Jinhui Liao, PhD
Dr. Jinhui Liao is a dedicated and passionate math educator with over ten years of teaching experience. He has deep knowledge of the K–12 mathematics curriculum and is a two-time recipient of the Distinguished Teacher Award from the Chinese School Association in the United States (CSAUS) (www.csaus.org).
Dr. Liao has taught a wide range of math courses, including creative problem solving, Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus. He also has extensive experience coaching Math Olympiad students. Many of his students have achieved outstanding results in national competitions such as the MATHCOUNTS State Competition, American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME), USA Junior Mathematical Olympiad (USAJMO), and USA Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO).
Dr. Liao is committed to helping students gain confidence and truly understand mathematical concepts. He believes that while memorization can be short-lived, deep understanding leads to long-term success. He encourages students to see math as a powerful tool for thinking critically and solving problems in the real world.
Zongyin Zhang, PhD
Zongyin Zhang holds a PhD in Materials Chemistry and is an experienced math educator with over 20 years of teaching and tutoring students from elementary to high school. He has taught a wide range of courses including Algebra, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus AB/BC, and AP Statistics. His teaching style is structured, clear, and supportive—helping students develop both deep understanding and strong problem-solving skills. Dr. Zhang has a strong background in advanced mathematics and test preparation, including SAT Math, PSAT Math and various math competition prep classes such as AMC 8, AMC 10.
