Course Description

Math 1B is designed for Grade 5  students.

Math 1B students are expected to use problem-solving strategies to determine operations needed to solve multi-step problems of fractions and decimals. They are taught to solve linear equations using real-life situations. Pictures, shapes, graphs, models, and other strategies are employed. Students use concrete materials to solve equations and are able to explain their reasoning orally and in writing. Students are also expected to evaluate exponential numbers as well as derive and apply the law for multiplying exponential numbers with like bases. Solve linear equations in one variable with rational number coefficients.

Students will study

  1. Prime and composite numbers
  2. Number system and negative numbers
  3. Greatest common factor and the least common multiple
  4. Operations with integers, fractions, decimals as well as mixed type of numbers
  5. Understand and evaluate exponential numbers maybe square roots
  6. Categorize linear equations on one variable and solve linear equations
  7. Operations with percent, ratios and proportions
  8. Intro to absolute value
  9. Probability and statistics
  10. Solve complex word problems with two- or three- more steps.

Angel Boker Biography

Angel Chen Boker has worked internationally in the U.S., China, and Japan for over 15 years. She speaks English, Mandarin, and Japanese, and brings strong skills in organization, planning, and communication. Though new to classroom teaching, she enjoys working with children and is excited to help them grow in confidence and understanding in math.

Angel Chen Boker’s goal is to make learning clear, structured, and enjoyable for every student.
