Si Chuan Chun Lei will release their plan for supporting earthquake children next week. Per our discussion with Chun Lei, they will help us identify and connect with earthquake children at one place, such as from one school or one town. Based on the grade levels of children identified, and Si Chuan Chun Lei's new, standardized amount of financial support for each earthquake child per year, we will then know how many children Ann Hua can support given our resources.

May we know how many grades Ann Hua now has? And how many Chinese classes? We wanted to get a sense for the possibilities of each Ann Hua grade or class adopt/sponsor one child. Ms. Liu hopes that Ann Hua students will write to sponsored children.

When I talked with Ms. Liu Jing, our Chun Lei contact yesterday, she was on her way to a meeting on relief efforts even though she was supposed to rest yesterday after weeks of non-stop relief work. Ms. Liu said children are now in tent schools and that at this point their number, family situations and origins/locations are quite fluid - there is still a lot of movement of people and children.

We believe we can send out our initial $5K next week once we receive the plan.

Dear All of the Ann Hua Community,

Over the coming weekend, fundraising activities will continue at Ann Hua. Your continued support is vital to the ones who have been disaster stricken. Please lend your hand!

1. Saturday 2:00pm - 6:00pm, Ann Hua Rainbow Project bake sale in the hallway outside of China Market on Plymouth Road. There will be American brownies, Chinese cake and rice cookies, Japanese jello, Malaysian desert and other goodies. Come out, do some grocery shopping and support the effort.
2. Sunday during school hours, Ann Hua will continue to raise funds for the 5.12 Sichuan earthquake relief. The school will match students' donations up to $2000 in total.

Also, the possibility is being discussed between the WCC International Student Council, Ann Hua Chinese School, CAGD and Canton Chinese School to organize a concert to raise funds for re-building disaster-hit areas in the world. The concert will be held on Sunday, September 14th, between 4 pm to 8 pm in the WCC Auditorim. More details to come. Stay tuned.

5月18日安华中文学校为汶川地震灾区募捐

　　2008年5月12日农历四月初八，印度板块强力挤压欧亚大陆板块。100多年的能量积蓄瞬间爆发。下午2点28分，介于两大版块交界处的四川省以汶川为中心发生7.8级 （修订后8级）地震，并波及大半个中国。在传媒手段极其发达的现代社会，当地的影像同步在世界各地播放。传说中的人间天堂与仿佛灾难片中的世界末日的强烈对比， 既让人感叹世事无常，又让每一个炎黄子孙肝肠寸断！

　　当美丽的家园瞬间夷为平地，当祖国的花朵还未绽放便已凋零，当震后5个小时就赶赴灾区的总理行走在强烈的余震中指挥救灾，当人民子弟兵用手指挖掘出遇难人员，当伞兵在恶劣天侯中冒险强行空降被困地区，当志愿者们徒步行走在随时可能发生滑坡与泥石流的山间，当现场记者冒死为我们传递出救援的进展，此时此刻，远在万里之遥的我们能做些什么？

　　作为侨居海外的中华儿女、炎黄子孙， 我们每一个人都有同一种深深的感怀。当我们越远离祖国，我们的心却更加贴近她。几千年血浓于水教化下的中国人，在祖国与同胞遭受重大的自然灾害的时刻，怎能坐视不管。5月18日，安华中文学校自发地组织开展了捐助活动。从同学们踊跃献出的自己积累的零用钱、压岁钱，到父母们慷慨献出的几十、成百或上千的支票现金，每一份对灾区人民浓浓的爱心让人感动！截止当日下午5时，安华中文学校共募集现金支票共计超过3万5千美元。

　　尤其值得一提的是, 在这次捐助活动中的最大一笔善款是10,000美元！捐款人是密执根大学地质系教授，也是安华中文学校曾经的老校长张有学和他的爱妻徐政久。了解安华历史的朋友们都不陌生，张校长不但为发展中文教育煞费苦心，更在历次祖国经历自然灾害时都慷慨解囊。这位低调而充满理想主义的知识分子竟然不愿在镜头前留下自己的影像。只有当我们搜索密执根大学的网页，才发现了张有学教授的一张照片。

512 Earthquake Relief donation compaign at AnnHua turned out to be a successful and very touching day today. As of the end of day, $35,098.69 in total was received (cash $2,025.41, check 33,073.28). I appreciate the $10,000 donated by Dr. Youxue Zhang and his wife Zhengjiu Xu, I also appreciate the same the pennies and nickels from our students who care and love so much. I appreciate AnnHua parents, teachers and student who donated at school to support, I appreciate even more the ones who trust AnnHua and came to school to donate through AnnHua. I also appreciate the same that many parents and teachers have been donated through their company or other ways. They should be recognized and appreciated the same at AnnHua. Also many appreciations to the volunteers who worked so hard to support the whole day event.

As promised, all the donors got the donation acknowledgment letter or receipt with thanks upon request. The total donations received (cash & check) have been confirmed and witnessed by AnnHua Administration Team and AnnHua Parents – with proper paper work and signatures. A Personal Plea

Please do not spread misinformation. I have heard mistrusts about the Red Cross repeated to me. Of course, Red Cross is not without scandals. Just google "Red Cross Scandal" and you will find out about much of them. However, I do believe you have to put everything in its context. According to Charity Navigator, an independent charity evaluator website, the American Red Cross' Program Expense is 94%, which is a quite remarkable number. One may certainly argue that the $500,000 CEO pay is excessive. But there must be cost at every organization. I would argue that the Red Cross still has the upper hand of scale of economy in its disaster relief operations. It is good to donate to any charity organization one trusts. But we all need to be careful not spread misinformation, especially when it's all hearsay.

A massive earthquake, measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale, jolted southwestern China's Sichuan Province. The quake destroyed many buildings including many schools. More than 20,000 people have died and more than 200,000 have been injured or are missing. Many of the victims are students or children. These numbers are expected to rise.

For the earthquake disaster relief, to help needy people in the disaster area – especially schools, students and children, AnnHua calls for your donation. All donations are tax deductible with a donation acknowledgement letter from AnnHua upon request.

粽子

我是黄隆，我今天给你们讲一个中国人吃粽子的故事。

什么是粽子呢？粽子是一个好吃的东西。粽子里面是米饭和肉和其它东西。粽子的外面是竹子叶子，用线绑起来的。粽子有四个角，像一个不规则的小石头。

中国人为什么吃粽子呢？在端午节，中国人都吃粽子。端午节是中国农历年的五月五日。端午节是为了纪念中国古代的爱国诗人-屈原。屈原为了爱国投江而死。中国人为了不让鱼吃了屈原的身体就扔粽子到江里去，让鱼吃。

Chinese Chess

Chinese Chess was invented in 700 A.D., and then was changed around 1200 A.D. into the game of Chinese Chess we know now. Chinese Chess is played differently from the usual game in Western civilizations, for one, the pao [2], must jump over another piece in order to capture.

Here is how to play. Red always moves first, no exceptions. The pieces are always stationed where the lines meet. You win like you win in Western Chess. The bing/zhu [1] may move forwards but not sideways until it has passed the middle of the board (the middle line does not count as a square) it also captures this way. The pao [2] may move in all directions except diagonally but cannot attack unless it is jumping over another piece (the other piece may be the enemies’, the piece your piece is jumping must be lined up with the piece you are attacking, you must land on the enemies’ piece, and you may not move after you attack.) The che [3] is like a queen, except that it cannot move diagonally. The ma [4] is just like a knight, except that it moves up, to the left and then up again, so it executes an L-shaped move, but does not move in an L-shape. The ma also cannot jump over other pieces. The xiang [5] moves on a 2 by 2 square, but in a diagonal course, so unless a piece is in the middle of the 2 by 2 square the xiang can move. It is one of the three pieces in this game which cannot cross the middle, the other two are the ones located in the 2 by 2 square with diagonal lines. The shi is the piece next to the jiang/shui; the jiang/shui is pretty much your king. Those pieces are located within the square with the diagonal lines. The shi can only diagonally, one square at a time, move within the square. The jiang/shui is located in the middle of the back row, in the square with the diagonal lines, with the shi. The jiang/shui can only move forwards and to the side, if the side is not blocked by a piece of its own color.

This game is very fascinating and I hope you know it better now.

Chinese Dumplings

Dumplings are a traditional food in Chinese cultures. They are made out of a couple of materials. The main ingredients are:

• Flour (dough)
• Meat and vegetables of your choice

These are the steps to making dumplings:

1. Shape dough into circular disks.
2. Chop up the meat and vegetables and put in a bowl. This is the filling of the dumplings.
3. Place the filling in the center of the disk of dough. Wrap the disk around the filling very tightly.
(A is for boiling dumplings, B is for frying the dumplings.)
4. a. Boil the water. After the water is boiling, put the dumplings in. When boils again pour the cold water to protect the dumpling from breaking. Repeat 2-3 times then the dumplings are ready to serve.
b. Pour 2 tsp oil on the heated pan, then put the dumpling on it. Also place a little bit of water on the pan so the dumplings won’t stick onto the pan. Cover the pan with the cover. 5 minutes later open the cover and the dumplings are ready to be served.

Many Chinese families eat dumplings during Chinese New Year. Now, many other people around the world eat dumplings and enjoy it too.
